Fort DeSoto Park is the crown jewel of the Pinellas County Park system in South West Florida – the Left Coast of FLA.
Don & I have been camping here for the past 7 years while we attend Spring Training at Steinbrenner field. Fort DeSoto provides a good base to explore the Tampa Bay area.
The Campground located within the Park has over 200 campsites – the majority large enough for Recreational Vehicles and many of those sites on the water. Located near Tierra Verda and about 30 miles outside of Tampa.
We were fortunate to get a good site with easy kayak launching from our campsites and great sunset views. An easy kayak paddle from the campsites to Shell key is a great way to spend the day – not much boat traffic or other visitors to the island which has great shelling. I did a solo ride this year as Don was down and out on a sofa one day during our visit.
Fort Desoto has many beaches which never seem to be over crowded with Snow Birds or Spring breakers. The park has become a mecca for wind and kite surfers as a wind always blows strong off the Gulf of Mexico.
In addition to the water sports available in the park, a hiking/biking trail is a good way to get some exercise in the great spring weather. And for you dog lovers, a LARGE dog run area is available for some doggie exercising and owner-socializing.
